The Irish East Coast in Black And White

I normally don’t over process my images, but I I like to experiment with different styles, such as shooting with slow shutter speed. Here are some slow shutter pictures of the Irish east coast as it fades from day to evening. A bit of black and white, plus a few other tweaks for effect of the coastal waters around Ireland.

Photography Challenge – Dublin in Wide Angle with a GoPro

A GoPro is a fun little camera for the purpose with which it was created. Which is to attach to something and take action shots. Great for motorcycle riders, surfers, and bicyclists. Beyond being a little action video camera it is also a camera. So as a photo challenge I thought it would be fun to go out and do some walking shots of Dublin with the camera on its full wide-angle setting. The challenge being that by default there is no viewfinder on the camera, so I couldn’t check out any of the pictures until I got home later. Kind of reminiscent of the old days of film.

These shots are what I ended up with:

One of the lessons I learned, be cautions of having a finger on the front of the camera. It’s very easy to pick it up in the wide angle setting. I also feel that the pictures are a little flat. I didn’t touch any of these up, by they really could use some contrast and color adjustments. Overall, a fun exercise in photostrolls.

Night Photography at The Beach with Lights

A few years ago a couple of friends and I went to the beach in Dublin and found this small group of people working with fire and various lights, giving us a chance for some great night photography. Night photography is something I love doing, just playing with the slow shutter and setting the camera on a tripod and trying different things to see what you end up with. And here are a few of the pics I did.

Medium Format Film Photography

I really enjoy shooting with film cameras. There is something about having to force oneself to get the picture right in camera. Film photography isn’t about taking a few pictures, looking at the view-screen, making adjustments and taking more. Film photography forces people to be aware of aperture and shutter speed. Using a film camera can even involve the use of a light meter. In the case of medium format film, the need to get each picture correct is more important as you only get 12 exposures. Depending on the camera and aspect ratio. Might be more or less.

Unfortunately, I don’t get to shoot with film often as it is expensive to purchase and expensive to develop. Yet, when I do I am almost always happy with the results. Instagram and other digital services offer filters that make digital images look like film images. The reason for this is the look of film is simply fantastic. So, if possible, why not film in the first place?

Here is a gallery of some medium format images that I have shot with my Rolleiflex camera or a cheap plastic Holga.
